Texas Travelers Warned After TSA Quietly Changes Rules On Flying With Weed
Texas travelers may want to pump the brakes before tossing gummies into their carry-on. A new TSA update has people online acting like airports suddenly turned into Cheech and Chong conventions, but here in Texas? Yeah…not exactly.
TSA Says “Maybe,” Texas Still Says “Careful”
According to the Transportation Security Administration, medical marijuana can now be allowed in carry-on and checked bags under certain circumstances. TSA officials have also made it clear that their main focus is security threats, not hunting for your stash.
That sounds great until you remember one important detail: Texas law still exists.

While some states have embraced recreational marijuana, Texas remains pretty strict outside of limited medical cannabis use through the Compassionate Use Program. So even if TSA agents aren’t actively searching for weed, local law enforcement at Texas airports can still make your travel day go from “vacation mode” to “call a lawyer mode” real quick.
The Texas Dude Who Took It WAY Too Far
And if you think authorities aren’t still cracking down, just ask a 23-year-old Texas man who allegedly tried flying out of Miami with a whopping 75 pounds of marijuana stuffed into luggage on a flight bound for London. Authorities arrested him on trafficking charges after the bags were flagged during screening.
Seventy-five pounds. Brother wasn’t packing for a vacation. He was apparently opening a dispensary at Gate C17.

What Texas Travelers Need To Know
CBD and hemp products with less than 0.3% THC are generally lower risk in Texas, but recreational marijuana is still federally illegal and can absolutely create problems at airports. TSA even states that if illegal substances are discovered, officers may refer the situation to law enforcement.
So no, this isn’t “weed is legal on planes now.” This is more like TSA is less interested in your gummies than somebody trying to smuggle a flamethrower onto American Airlines.
