Abilene proved two things Wednesday evening: Texans really love pizza, and they'll brave just about any temperature for a good cause.

I rolled up around 4:30 p.m. for Domino's Customer Appreciation Day, and the event didn't even start until 5. The line? Wrapped around the building and stretched farther than I expected. We're talking hundreds of people standing outside in 98-degree heat, waiting patiently for some $3 pizzas.

One guy at the very front of the line told me he got there at 3:30 p.m. That's right...he waited two hours before the event even started. That's either dedication or a level of pizza commitment I can only respect.

Despite the brutal Texas heat, spirits stayed high. Plenty of folks brought umbrellas for shade, and thankfully Bahama Buck's was on-site helping people cool off while they waited.

Once 5 p.m. hit, the line started moving surprisingly smoothly. There were a few brief pauses as Domino's worked to keep up with the massive demand, but considering the crowd size, the operation ran impressively well.

And people weren't just grabbing a pizza or two.

I watched customers walk away with stacks of pizza boxes. One prison guard rolled out with roughly 30 pizzas. Thirty! With no purchase limits, families could feed large groups, stock up for later, or throw an impromptu pizza party without breaking the bank.

Supporting Veterans One Slice at a Time

The best part of the entire event wasn't the pizza. It was the purpose behind it.

For every $3 pizza sold, $1 was donated to Permian Basin Honor Flight, an organization that helps transport veterans to Washington, D.C., so they can visit the memorials built in their honor.

By the end of the event, Domino's sold more than 1,600 pizzas, generating nearly $4,800 in sales. Even better, that means $1,600 is headed directly to Permian Basin Honor Flight to help support local veterans.

Thank You, Abilene

Even though it was hot as all get-out, Abilene showed up in a big way. The crowd was patient, friendly, and eager to support both Domino's and our veterans.

Thanks to everyone who stood in the heat, grabbed some pizza, and helped support a great cause. Abilene proved once again that when food and community come together, this town shows up.
