In September 2017's first installment of the Guest Room Sessions, Colorado-based artist Buckstein offers up his take on electro-pop superstar Mike Posner’s “I Took a Pill in Ibiza.” In the clip, which readers can watch above, he’s joined by fiddle player Jennifer Scott, in his car, for a countrified version of the track, re-titled "I Took a Pill in Memphis."

"I Took a Pill in Ibiza" might seem like an unlikely choice of song, but Buckstein says that Posner’s international hit has a particular relevance for musicians and songwriters, especially after he reworked the lyrics a little bit to more closely reflect his own experiences.

“I chose this song because of its meaningful and impactful lyrics and how relevant they are to artists everywhere,” the artist tells The Boot. “It’s a beautiful melody as well as an extremely well-written cautionary tale about how this business is no guaranteed joyride.”

Fans might recognize Buckstein from his time on American Idol’s fifth season. He says he specifically changed one line in this cover to "I get along with old-timers 'cause my name's a reminder of a TV show people forgot" to reflect his time on the TV singing competition.

"That change was a direct reflection of how I feel about my past American Idol experience," Buckstein says. "It was so long ago, and the show has gone away, although it is coming back again, but some people (mostly older) still remember me from it.”

These days, Buckstein is reinventing himself as an artist. Over the summer, he released a brand-new EP, titled Country Side.

“There’s a lot of heart in these five tunes,” Buckstein said in a statement when the album was released back in June. “Making them has been a very valuable experience. It has shown me not only where I am but where I want to go from here.”

Beginning in September, The Boot’s Guest Room Sessions are running twice a month, on the first and 15th. Be sure to check back on Sept. 15 for a new clip!
