Why does Abilene, Texas, feel different lately? If you ask me, I believe it feels like something major has changed around here lately. And if you're feeling the same way, you are not alone.

Is Growth Playing a Role in Abilene, Texas?

Abilene is growing, and there’s no denying it. It seems to me that our city is seeing more people, more traffic, and more activity than ever before. And with that growth, some from around here are starting to ask questions. Is the increase in population contributing to what we’re seeing?

At this point, there’s no official data directly linking recent incidents to new residents or outside workers. But what is clear is that Abilene is changing, and doing it fast.

Over the past few weeks, it "appears" like more and more headlines have popped up about serious crimes across Abilene. From a recent shooting in north Abilene, to a tragic death near Lake Fort Phantom, to a father and son arrested for homicide, and there are multiple ongoing investigations, it’s enough to make anyone stop and ask:

What’s really going on in Abilene, Texas?

Now, before we jump to conclusions, let’s take a breath. Not every incident is connected, and not every case points to a rising trend.

Are We Seeing More Crime, Or Just More Awareness?

That’s the real question here. According to past data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program and local police reports, cities the size of Abilene can experience fluctuations in crime throughout the year. Some months are quieter, while others can feel overwhelming. Add social media and 24/7 news updates into the mix, and suddenly we’re seeing everything, instantly. So, I'll ask again, "Is crime actually rising?

The Abilene Police Department continues to investigate several recent cases, and in each situation, they’ve made it clear: these are active investigations, and facts are still being gathered.

A Community That Still Looks Out For Each Other

I’ve lived here for over 50 years, and if there’s one thing I know about Abilene, it’s this: We care about each other.

So maybe instead of fear, this is a moment for awareness. A reminder to check on your neighbors, stay alert, and continue doing what we West Texans do best, and that is: looking out for one another.

Because at the end of the day, Abilene is still our home. And it’s up to all of us to keep it safe and strong.
