Chris Hardwick’s ‘@Midnight’ Canceled After Four Seasons
Chris Hardwick may be everywhere in pop-culture, but one of the busiest hosts in Hollywood is down a gig. Comedy Central’s interactive @midnight will call it quits after six-hundred episodes, airing its final episode in August.
Deadline broke word that the title host informed the @midnight With Chris Hardwick staff as much, setting the final week of shows to begin on July 31 and end on August 4; its 600th episode. The decision was reportedly mutual between Hardwick, Comedy Central and producers Funny Or Die.
Said Hardwick:
@midnight has meant the world to me these last four years. It has been a dream to come to work 600 times to make inappropriate jokes about the Internet with my fellow comedian friends. I could not be more proud of this show, staff and crew and at the end of the day, I think we accomplished everything we wanted to accomplish. Spiritually it just feels like it ran its course – I’m not sure we had many more hashtag games in us (which may actually be a relief to anyone whose Twitter feed gets overrun every night).
Added Comedy Central:
We took a big macro look and we started having conversations with Chris. We feel incredibly proud of the show, we think it’s had an amazing run. How many shows can say that they’d hit 600 episodes? It was a little bit of the audience telling us over time, and we mutually thought, ‘You know what, maybe we should walk away holding our heads high and proud, full of appreciation and gratitude.’
The series notably increased its viewership with a move to 11:30 P.M., but remained somewhat flat against The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, averaging between 400k and 490k viewers. The article also claims there’s talk of reexamining the show’s concept this fall, though The President Show or Jordan Klepper’s new late-night show may take over in the interim.
Hardwick of course still has his AMC Talking shows and a plethora of other roles, but will @midnight be missed?
