‘Brigsby Bear’ Teaser Stars Kyle Mooney, Mark Hamill, and a Stuffed Bear
One of the unexpected delights of this past Sundance Film Festival was Brigsby Bear, whose bizarre humor from star Kyle Mooney (yes, SNL’s Kyle Mooney) charmed audiences and critics alike. It’s about a young lad raised in isolation, whose only connection to the rest of the world outside his family is a TV show about a stuffed bear who goes on adventures. One day, the show suddenly ends, and Mooney must go in search of Brigsby Bear’s conclusion.
At the risk of filling you in on all the details before you get to see the movie, I’ll skip the plot outline, which spoils a couple big revelations right off the bat. From the looks of this teaser, Sony Pictures Classics doesn’t want audiences going on knowing a whole lot about the story. The film is directed by Dave McCary, who’s a longtime friend of Mooney’s even before he was hired by NBC, and who’s worked with him on a number of SNL sketches in the past. Their particular brand of comedy skews towards this weird place between the peculiar and the heartwarming, which there also seems to be a lot of in this movie. (I mean, every time I see Mooney in an SNL sketch I want to take him out for an ice cream.)
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Brigsby Bear Adventures is a children’s TV show produced for an audience of one: James (Kyle Mooney). When the show abruptly ends, James’s life changes forever, he sets out to finish the story himself and must learn to cope with the realities of a new world that he knows nothing about.
