A lot of times these scammers are sounding genuine and give one the feeling they are there to help. However, in reality, the scammers just want your money. Be careful because they give off the appearance that they are a well-certified company and as soon as they get paid "to go buy materials" the scam has been executed.

John Riggins, President of the Better Business Bureau of Abilene says "all too often our roofs, plumbing, trees and vehicles succumb to the severe ice storms. Many times causing damage that cannot be seen right away. If you have had any damage, the Better Business Bureau offers these reminders:

  • Start with a calling your insurance provider. They will let you know what your coverage is and may offer a list of service providers to assist you.
  • Check reviews from independent sources for companies you are unfamiliar with. A great place to start is on our BBB website.
  • Don’t be pressured by a person who shows up on your doorstep. Request a copy of their contract for your review and contact information. They will accept your business later after you have done your homework.
  • Being asked for a large advance coan be a red flag letting you know to look further.
  • If feasible, get at least three estimates before making a decision.
