If you've ever watched the cable television show 'Spartacus' you know the men are fabulously built and strong fighters. Actor Andy Whitfield has lost his battle with cancer. Diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma just 18 months ago he passed away with friends and family nearby.

Whitfield was 39 years old. He was born in Wales but moved to and lived in Australia in 1999.

He rose to fame in 2010 when he was cast in the Starz cable network show 'Spartacus' as a Thracian slave. He appeared in all of the episodes aired in the 2010 (first) season of the show. It was while preparing for the second season of shooting that he was diagnosed with cancer.

Changes were made in the show so that Whitfield could complete treatment. They filmed a "prequel" to the show that aired the beginning of this year. This is actually the part of the show I was watching and became interested in the show. It is very graphic, violent and very much an "adult" show. The story line however, is very intriguing. I was unaware of the Whitfield character, he only did small voice over work during these 6 episodes.

In January another Australian actor took over the role when it was determined that Whitfield was too sick to return. Unfortunately, Whitfield lost his battle yesterday at the age of 39.

Here is a clip of Whitfield in action as his 'Spartacus' character, teaching the soldiers if fighting.
