Memorial Day in Texas: Honor the Flag Don’t Break These Flag Laws
As Memorial Day approaches on Monday, May 26, 2025, many of us will be flying Old Glory to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. But displaying the red, white, and blue comes with responsibility. Our American flag is more than cloth, it’s a symbol of sacrifice, freedom, and national pride. And it deserves to be treated with proper respect.

At My House, the Flag Flies Proud
At my home on the south side of Abilene, you’ll see Old Glory flying high, above the service flags of the military branches that members of my family have proudly served in. But every year around this time, I also notice how many businesses and homes fly the flag incorrectly, often unknowingly violating proper U.S. Flag Code guidelines.
Yes, There Is a Flag Code. And It's the Law!
Many folks don’t realize that the U.S. Flag Code outlines how and when the American flag should be flown. While it doesn’t carry penalties for violations, it is federal law, and a powerful reminder of the deep respect we owe the flag.
One of the most common violations I see around Abilene is flying the flag at night without proper lighting. Another is displaying flags that are faded, torn, or weather-damaged. Some even use U.S. and Texas flags as decorations and then leave them behind when they move out, something that goes against the very principles the flag represents.

Key Rules for Displaying the American Flag
- Here are the most important guidelines, directly based on the U.S. Flag Code:
- The flag should be illuminated if flown at night.
- Only all-weather flags should be flown in rain, snow, or storms.
- The flag should never be dipped to any person or object.
- Never fly the flag upside down unless as a signal of distress.
- Do not use the flag for decoration. Instead, use patriotic bunting, with blue on top.
- Do not use the flag in advertising or on disposable items like napkins or boxes.
- Flag clothing is discouraged, except for official uniforms (military, police, fire, and patriotic organizations).
- No writing or symbols should ever appear on the flag.
- Never use the flag to carry or hold items.
- When lowering the flag, don’t let it touch the ground. It should be caught and folded with care.
- Keep your flag clean and in good repair.
- A flag that’s no longer fit to fly should be burned in a respectful manner.
To dispose of a flag that is no longer fit to fly, contact the Texas Trails Council of the Boy Scouts for proper flag retirement ceremonies. The Scouts of the Big Country are here to help in any way they can.
