Meet Vicki: The Adorable Sloth Bear Now at the Abilene Zoo
If you’re like me and have spent decades making memories at the Abilene Zoo, whether for birthdays, family outings, or just a day of fun, you’re in for a special treat. For the first time in recent memory, the Abilene Zoo is now home to a sloth bear, one of the rarest animals you’ll ever lay eyes on.

A Sassy Visitor from the Smithsonian
Say hello to Vicki, a 12-year-old female sloth bear who recently arrived from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington. Known for her sass, smarts, and curious personality, Vicki will be a temporary guest here in Abilene until the zoo’s expansion project begins in Spring 2026.
She’s easy to spot with her poufy hair and stylish middle part, and you might catch her devouring thousands of insects at once or playing with her toys. True to her species, Vicki enjoys a solitary lifestyle, just like sloth bears in the wild.
What Makes Sloth Bears So Special?
Native to India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, sloth bears are listed as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. With fewer than 20,000 left in the wild, their survival depends on conservation efforts, such as the AZA Species Survival Plan, which focuses on breeding, education, and research across accredited zoos.

Vicki is now one of only about 30 sloth bears in North America’s AZA-accredited zoos. With her shaggy coat, long curved claws, and a vacuum-like snout made for eating up to 50,000 ants or termites a day, she plays a key role in teaching visitors about biodiversity and forest health.
Come See Vicki This Summer
“We’re excited for our community to get to know Vicki,” said Robert Trejo, Animal Curator at the Abilene Zoo. “She’s not only fascinating to watch, but she also helps us share the importance of saving this incredible species.”
Vicki is available for viewing daily during the zoo’s summer hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To learn more or get tickets, visit abilenezoo.org.
