I posted a question on my Facebook page the other day, and wow, it got people talking. Do we have too many businesses in Abilene, Texas, or not enough?

With new places popping up across town, including a major development anchored by Bass Pro Shops and several new restaurants, it feels like growth is happening fast. But not everyone agrees on whether that’s a good thing.

Texas Growth in Abilene: Opportunity or Overload?

Some folks say Abilene is booming, and that’s a win for jobs, choices, and the local economy. Others argue we’re getting too many of the same types of businesses, especially coffee shops and chains.

And I get both sides.

Because here’s the real question:
Is it about having more businesses, or having the right ones?

Texas Local Businesses: The Real Challenge

I’ve always believed you can never have too many local businesses.

But here’s where I think we fall short, and I’ll own up to this opinion.

Local businesses don’t always promote themselves like the big national brands do.

Take McDonald's, for example. Everybody knows what a Big Mac or an Egg McMuffin is. But they still advertise it constantly. You’ll hear a radio spot at 7:45 in the morning reminding you exactly what you’re craving.

It’s not by accident, it's their plan and their strategy for having a successful business.

It’s called Top Of Mind Awareness, or “TOMA.”

Texas Marketing Lesson: Why TOMA Matters

Big brands stay in your head because they never leave it.

Meanwhile, some of our best local spots?
You might only hear about them once… if at all.

That’s the difference.

If local businesses want to compete, they don’t just need great products, they need consistent visibility. Advertising, social media, radio, community presence, all of it matters.

Texas Voices: What Do You Think?

So now I’m asking you:

Too many businesses in Abilene? Not enough of what we want or need? I want your HONEST opinions, please. After I posted this question on Facebook, the responses came in fast, and honestly, they were all over the board. See for yourself, these are but just a few:
