Texas Dogs Go Full Speed at Abilene’s Fast CAT Event
If you’ve ever looked at your dog and thought, “I bet you could outrun anything in West Texas,” this is your moment.

The Abilene Kennel Club is bringing back one of the most exciting canine competitions around, the Fast CAT (Coursing Ability Test), and it’s happening right here in Abilene. And let me tell you, once you see these dogs take off, you’ll understand why I call it more of a coursing agility test.
What Is Fast CAT in Texas?
Fast CAT stands for Coursing Ability Test, and it’s basically a 100-yard dash for dogs.
Each dog runs one at a time, chasing a mechanical lure down a straight course. No obstacles, no distractions, just pure speed, instinct, and heart.
And here’s the cool part:
The system clocks their time and converts it into miles per hour. So yes, you’ll literally find out how fast your dog really is.
Who Can Compete in West Texas?
This is one of my favorite things about Fast CAT: And it’s open to ALL dogs.
Big dogs, small dogs, purebred, mixed breed, doesn’t matter.
If your pup loves to run and chase, they can compete. And even if they’re not the fastest, they’ll have the time of their life doing it.
The event is hosted by the Abilene Kennel Club, a long-standing group that’s been supporting dog lovers across the Big Country for decades.
When and Where in Abilene, Texas?
The Fast CAT event returns to:
- Oscar Rose Park 2605 South 7th Street, Abilene, Texas
- April 11 & 12, 2026 April (weekend event)
Quick tip: Dates can shift slightly year to year, so it’s always smart to check the Abilene Kennel Club website or Facebook page for the latest schedule and registration details.
Why West Texans Love This Event
This isn’t just a competition, it’s a full-on dog lover’s weekend.
You’ll see:
- Dogs flying down the track at top speed
- Owners cheering like it’s the Super Bowl
- Families enjoying a day out in the park
- And a whole lot of wagging tails
Plus, events like this bring folks in from all over Texas, which is always a win for Abilene.

A True Texas Celebration of Dogs
I’ve said it before, and I'll say it again, anything that celebrates our four-legged family members is something I’m all about.
Between my own rescues and everything we do here in the Big Country for animals, events like this just hit home.
So whether your dog is a couch potato or a full-blown speed machine, this is one Texas event you don’t want to miss.
Because somewhere out there, Abilene’s fastest dog is ready to run.
