Wii U and 3DS Cloud Support Won’t Be a Priority

Nintendo’s big boss recently spoke to investors at a Corporate Policy Briefing. He had some interesting things to say about the future of Nintendo products.

International Business Times has reported on Corporate Policy Briefing and how Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, discussed cloud gaming, specifically the perception that it’s the future of gaming.

Iwata said, “The term ‘cloud gaming’ is one of the words we have lately heard so often, but I would like people to understand that there are certain things that cloud gaming cannot achieve… I find it strange that many people claim that cloud gaming is the future. Our stance is that dedicated gaming platforms will not die out and we are determined to create a future where they will not.”

This is different stance than Sony’s, which is one of Nintendo’s big competitors. The company behind the PlayStation 3 purchased GaiKai, a cloud gaming company, in July 2012. Bloomberg Businessweek spoke to Sony CEO Kaz Hirai about the purchase and he said that GaiKai is, “going to propel the movement of the video game business into the cloud space very quickly.”

In regard to digital downloads, Iwata said, ”I have no intention of simply replacing the packaged business with the digital download one, but it is also true that there are several issues with the current packaged software distribution business.”

So despite the fact that the company won’t put a focus on cloud gaming, digital downloads are an important facet of their software sales that need to be retooled, especially now that more titles are finding their way into the eShops.
