Things to Do With Kids ‘Outside’ This Summer

Last week I told you some health risks involved with playing video games for hours on end. Since it’s summer, that is what many teens will be doing this summer. So I have a few idea that might help get them outdoors, at least for a little while, this summer.

Swimming

Swimming is fun and good exercise. Plus, it keeps you cool but don't forget the sunscreen. Whether you have a backyard pool, member of a private club or visit one of the community pools this is a great activity for the summer months. Kids love to hang out at the pool with their friends and it gets them out of the house for a bit.

Putt-Putt/Miniature Golf

Putt-putt or miniature golf as it is sometimes called has already been an activity for my family. Last weekend my family and our 14 year old's girlfriend went to play a round of miniature golf and then a game of bowling. We all had a great time and it's something you do as a family. It's fun to compete against each other and see who can win but best of all is the laughing and memories you make doing it.

Bike Riding

Bike riding is inexpensive, great exercise and can be done alone, with friends or family. My family all has bikes and we take them out for a spin every once in a while, not as often as we should though. The last time we did a family bike ride we took them with us to Big Bend and rode the bike trails. You can ride in your neighborhood, at the park, on trails; it really doesn't matter as long as you get out doors and peddle.

Camping

As I have mentioned before I had never been camping until 2 years ago and I fell in love with it. This is something you can do for one night, a weekend or a week. You can go to a park, lake or just into your own backyard. Put up the tent, cook some hotdogs on the grill/fire, make some s'mores, tell some ghost stories and you have a great camping experience.

Gardening

I remember when I was a kid my mom had us start a small garden at the side of our house. We had onions, tomatoes, strawberries and radishes. My brother and I went out everyday to check and see if anything was coming up. When the vegetables started popping up we were so excited. The strawberries were the most exciting though. You and the kids can make a small garden of just a few plants, feed them, water them, watch them grow and then eat them. You get fresh vegetables and the kids have a fun learning experience.
