‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ May Skip the Summer and Hit Theaters on Christmas 2015

Star Wars Episode 7 Christmas

When ‘Star Wars: Episode 7‘ was initially announced, a 2015 release date was attached, leading everyone everywhere to believe that J.J. Abrams‘ film would arrive in May of that year. And why wouldn’t they? All six previous ‘Star Wars‘ films have opened in that month and that month has certainly been kind to the franchise. However, new buzz suggests that while the latest entry in the saga will indeed hit theaters in 2015, it’ll break tradition and do so a little later in the year.

How would you like some ‘Star Wars’ during your holiday season? We’re not talking about the infamous and maligned ‘Star Wars’ Christmas Special. Good heavens, no. We’re talking about a December, 2015 release date for ‘Star Wars: Episode 7,’ which will see the world’s most popular franchise pull out of the summer for the first time ever.

The news comes via Badass Digest, who report that that Disney and LucasFilm are eying a mid-month release for the hotly anticipated film. Although it seems unusual that they’d take a surefire blockbuster like this out of the summer, everything surrounding this news makes perfect sense. After all, we’ve been hearing news for awhile now that the production needs more time to get its act together and this will give Abrams and the folks at LucasFilm an additional seven months to get their script in tip-top shape (there’s a reason nothing about the film was announced at D23).

And then there’s the summer 2015 movie season itself, which promises to be one of the most packed and competitive, well, ever. ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ may be a guaranteed hit, but it’ll do well to get out of the way of ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ ‘Inside Out,’ ‘Independence Day 2′ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5.’ Heck, we could see Disney’s wily marketing team make a big deal about the new ‘Star Wars’ being the event of the holiday season that you and your family should see again and again. [Ed. note: it’s also really, really good for merchandising to release a ‘Star Wars’ movie during the holiday season.]

So, while this is all unconfirmed speculation, it all makes too much sense to not be true. The only thing that could come out of a December 2015 release for ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ is a better movie and less competition at the multiplex. It’s a win-win.
