Should Texas Allow Beer to be Sold Before Noon on Sundays?
This past Sunday, I got up way early to do some stuff, then get ready to crack open a few beers to watch the Dallas Cowboys game. The only problem was, I was out of beer, and by the time I got done with my stuff and went to the store, it was not noon yet. Yep, the ‘blue law‘ got me again.
If you’re not familiar with what the ‘blue law’ is, it’s basically a law that prohibits the sale of liquor on Sundays, and you can’t buy beer until after noon. Also, in Texas, car dealerships have a choice to be open on either Saturday or Sunday – not both days.
Now, I got up about 6:30am to go play disc golf. After my game, I went home and and did some lawn work which included mowing, trimming and edging – about 2 hours worth of some pretty hard work. After sweating my rear end off, I went to the store to get a few things, and thought that I would pick up some beer to drink while I watched the Cowboys game. But, I forgot it was Sunday and since it was not noon yet, I couldn’t buy it.
Why in the wide world of sports, can we not buy beer in Texas before noon on Sundays?
I mean, I know why (blue law), but why is it still in effect? I wasn’t trying to throw down a big ‘ol party or anything like that. I just simply wanted a beer after working my butt off, but couldn’t because of the ‘blue law’.
I just don’t get it.
I know the reasoning behind the ‘blue law’ and all of that, but, come on man…it’s 2012 for crying out loud! Shouldn’t it be our right to be able to buy beer before noon? What if my religion called for a beer to be consumed before noon every Sunday?
Look, my whole world doesn’t revolve around beer, for the most part. But, by gosh, if I want a beer after doing some hard work on a Sunday, I should be able to buy myself a beer or two. I’m not talking about buying a bottle of Jack and going to town on it, I’m just talking about beer. Yes, I realize that I could have bought the beer the day before, but that is not the point. The point is, not being able to buy beer before noon, in my opinion, is just downright UN-American.
What are your thoughts on the ‘blue law’ in Texas?
