Sam Jackson Slams Film Critic Over ‘Avengers’ Review

Nick Fury’s work is never done. As ‘The Avengers’ blasts its way into theaters, Samuel L. Jackson found himself engaging in a vicious battle with a mortal enemy more sinister than Loki – a film critic.

And not just any film critic, but New York Times scribe A.O. Scott, who shredded Joss Whedon’s blockbuster in his review.

“While ‘The Avengers’ is hardly worth raging about, its failures are significant and dispiriting. The light, amusing bits cannot overcome the grinding, hectic emptiness, the bloated cynicism that is less a shortcoming of this particular film than a feature of the genre.”

Jackson took to Twitter to respond, rarely a good idea. He told fans Scott needed a new job.

Then Jackson fielded a few responses from bewildered fans who basically said Scott’s entitled to his opinion. Which is precisely what Scott backed up when he spoke to E! about the cat fight.

“I don’t think Mr. Jackson is actually trying to get me fired. Actors and filmmakers sometimes respond angrily to negative reviews—I can’t say I blame them—and Twitter is a relatively new and very public forum for that. Rallying ‘fans’ against skeptical critics is a time-honored tactic, and I don’t take it personally.”

This should all blow over by the time Scott reviews Jackson’s inevitable sequel to ‘Snakes on a Plane.’ In the meantime, the winner of this Twitter scrap ends up being Stu VanAirsdale of Movieline, who summarized:

“Has it really come to a 63-year-old actor flaming a 45-year-old critic over a $200 million film made for 12-year-olds?”
