Randy Travis Pleads Not Guilty to Assault Charges, New Details Emerge From Church Parking Lot Incident

Randy Travis entered a not guilty plea as a response to assault charges stemming from an August parking lot incident in Plano, Texas. The tangle at the Prestonwood Baptist Church resulted in the singer being charged with a Class C simple assault, which a spokesman for the Plano police described as something from a simply unwanted touch to any physical contact that doesn’t cause pain or injury.

During today’s proceedings, the Dallas News reports that Travis’ lawyer, Larry Friedman, said the singer stepped in to defend his girlfriend from two men, not just the girlfriend’s estranged husband, Dr. Ritchie Beougher, as originally reported.

“When he intervened, one of those two attackers attacked Randy, and he defended himself,” Friedman explains. “When the police arrived, one attacker was on top of Randy, and the police pulled him off Randy. But Randy was trying to protect the two women from further harm.”

In August, the estrange husband’s lawyer told Taste of Country a very different story. Gregory Shamoun said Dr. Beougher had “sole right to take possession of the child,” meaning the estranged couple’s child together, but when he tried to do so, Travis intervened and “threatened to kill him.”

Reports that Travis was under the influence of alcohol at the time turned out to be unsubstantiated. Travis has since sworn off alcohol, Friedman said. The trial will take place on March 11, 2013.
