The second day of the NCAA Tournament saw the heavyweights come out in the South Region, courtesy of the top three seeds taking to the court in a day featuring six games.

Fifteenth-seeded Florida Gulf Coast shocked second-seeded Georgetown in the tournament's biggest upset thus far on Friday. North Carolina beat Big East school Villanova, while Florida shook off its loss in the SEC Tournament final and routed Northwestern State. San Diego State beat Oklahoma in one of the more anonymous second-round match-ups. Sixteenth-seeded Western Kentucky nearly made history by bringing down number one-seed Kansas, while UCLA could not overcome the loss of Jordan Adams when it met Minnesota.

(1) Kansas 64, (16) Western Kentucky 57

Jeff Withey scored 17 points and top-seeded Kansas edged Western Kentucky, 64-57, in a second round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament's South Region on Friday evening in Kansas City, Mo. Leading by one point at halftime, Western Kentucky was bidding to become the first No. 16 seed to beat a No. 1 seed in NCAA history, but they could not complete the upset. The Jayhawks finally solved the Hilltoppers' full-court pressure and gained the victory. Kansas advanced to play North Carolina and former coach Roy Williams on Sunday. Jamal Crook scored 13 points to lead Western Kentucky.

(11) Minnesota 83, (6) UCLA 63

Andre Hollins scored 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Minnesota routed UCLA, 83-63, in a second round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament's South Region in Austin, Tex. on Friday evening. The Golden Gophers led by double-digits for most of the game, eventually outscoring the Bruins by 10 in each half. UCLA point guard Larry Drew II had four points, three assists and five turnovers. The Bruins shot just 32 percent from the field. Minnesota advanced to play Florida on Sunday.

(7) San Diego State 70, (10) Oklahoma 55

Jamaal Franklin scored 21 points, and San Diego State beat Oklahoma, 70-55, in a second round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament's South Region on Friday evening in Philadelphia. After Oklahoma took a two-point lead into halftime, the Aztecs outscored the Sooners by 17 in the second half to secure the win. San Diego State advanced to play Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. Romero Osby led Oklahoma with 22 points and eight rebounds.

(8) North Carolina 78, (9) Villanova 71

P.J. Hairston scored 23 points, and North Carolina recovered after blowing a 20-point first-half lead to beat Villanova, 78-71, in a second round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament's South Region in Kansas City, Mo. on Friday evening. The Tar Heels jumped out to a huge advantage before a 17-5 run by Villanova cut UNC's lead to eight at halftime. The Wildcats took the lead in the second half, but could not hold it. JayVaughn Pinkston scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Villanova. North Carolina advanced to play Kansas on Sunday.

(15) Florida Gulf Coast 78, (2) Georgetown 68

Sherwood Brown scored 24 points and Bernard Thompson added 23, as 15th-seeded Florida Gulf Coast upset second-seeded Georgetown, 78-68, in a second round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament's South Region on Friday evening in Philadelphia. Making their first NCAA tournament appearance in school history, the Eagles led by two at halftime and gradually pulled away in the second half. Florida Gulf Coast advanced to play San Diego State on Sunday. Markel Starks led the Hoyas with 23 points, while Otto Porter Jr. scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Georgetown.

(3) Florida 79, (14) Northwestern State 47

Erik Murphy scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as Florida routed Northwestern State, 79-47, in a second round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament's South Region in Austin, Tex. on Friday evening. After stumbling against Ole Miss in the SEC tournament title game last Sunday, the Gators looked dominant, breaking out to an eight-point lead at halftime and pulling away in the final 20 minutes. Florida advanced to play Minnesota on Sunday. DeQuan Hicks led Northwestern State with 12 points and eight boards.
