FX's 'American Horror Story: Coven' may have the market cornered on unsettling Louisiana-style drama, but HBO's star-studded 2014 drama 'True Detective' may yet give the 'Coven' a run for its money. The new Woody Harrelson-Matthew McConaughey crime drama directed by Cary Fukunaga has released five brand-new teasers from the series, each as moody and dark as the ones that precede it.

‘True Detective’ follows investigators Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), whose lives intertwine during a 17-year hunt for a Louisiana serial killer. Their investigation of a gruesome 1995 murder cuts through testimony from the detectives in 2012, after the case re-opens. The eight-episode series also stars Kevin Dunn ('Veep'), Michelle Monaghan ('Open'), Alexandra Daddario ('Percy Jackson') and Elizabeth Reaser ('Twilight').

The brief teasers don't offer very much in the way of story but all the same establish a dark and unsettling mood with a more grounded sense of dread than most series we've seen before. And like ‘American Horror Story,’ each new season of the drama will focus on new characters and a new central mystery, though likely with an all-new cast rather than return McConaughey or Harrelson in new roles.

You can check out the full set of teasers for ‘True Detective’ above and below, and tell us in the comments if you’ll tune in for the January 2014 premiere!
