History may record the Cold War as having formally ended, but FX thankfully isn’t letting theirs die just yet. Critical beacon The Americans will officially return for Season 4 in 2016, keeping Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys in the Russian spy game at least one more year.

The Americans will return for the standard order of 13 episodes in 2016, according to FX’s official dossier on the matter. Four episodes remain in the current season, with the final currently scheduled for Wednesday, April 22. Says the cable network of its prestige renewal:

Remarkably, this season of The Americans has achieved even greater acclaim than that of its first two seasons. The series has cemented it status with critics as television’s best current drama and arguably the best show on TV, and we couldn’t agree more. That universal critical praise is a tribute to the talents of Joe, Joel, Keri, Matthew, Noah and the entire cast and crew. We look forward to the final four episodes of season three, and beyond, in Philip and Elizabeth Jennings’ riveting journey.

Adds executive producers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields:

It’s been a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a show like this with the immensely talented and immeasurably supportive team at FX and Fox 21 Television Studios. We are blessed with an extraordinary cast and crew and grateful that we’ll all be able to continue telling this story that we love so much.

The Americans notably under-performs in ratings, apart from its critical acclaim, a problem that often plagues FX darlings (cough, Justified). Time will tell if all its regulars return intact (or if Frank Langella will continue on with the series), but this is fantastic news. Watch The Americans from the beginning, and then watch Season 4 in 2014, folks! Do yourself the favor.
