Stephen Colbert Fires Shots at Trump in His 2017 Emmys Opening Monologue
First joined by nominees Alison Janney and Anthony Andersson, Colbert broke into song in a typical awards show musical opening fashion. He danced with Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven and the Demogorgon, made a healthcare joke about The Handmaid’s Tale, danced with glittery handmaids on stage Cabaret style, and Chance the Rapper showed up!
During his opening monologue, Colbert took a moment to ask viewers to donate to hurricane relief funds. The host squeezed in some jokes about the HBO hacks and the controversy over the network’s upcoming Confederate. Colbert got political too, questioning why previous Emmy nominee Donald Trump never took home an award – “Maybe he wouldn’t have run for president,” the host joked. But Colbert quickly made it clear that he’d be taking an anti-Trump stance tonight. “Because unlike the presidency, Emmys go to the winner of the popular vote,” he said. And then, in another surprise cameo, Sean Spicer came out on stage, much to Melissa McCarthy’s stunned reaction.
