Emma Watson Could Slip into ‘Cinderella’

Today is a good day for the former cast-mates of ‘Harry Potter‘ as not only is Daniel Radcliffe signing up for ‘Frankenstein,‘ while Emma Watson is now in early talks for ‘Cinderella,’ which will be directed by her ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ co-star Kenneth Branagh.

This comes from Variety, and it sounds like great casting. We’ve seen Watson try to get away from her ‘Potter’ past, and she’s done so with high marks — Watson was excellent in ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower.’ This may put her back in the fantasy realm, but her Hermione Granger was a bookworm who blossomed, but was never a princess. Then again any modern take will likely (or at least superficially) make her proactive and a paradigm of something. She would be playing against Cate Blanchett, who is attached to play the wicked stepmother.

It’s surprising that this project survived after original director Mark Romanek left the project. He was deemed too dark for the material, and so Kenneth Branagh was brought in. Branagh has a had a late career resurgence as a director. He was a surprising choice to helm ‘Thor,’ but that worked out well for Marvel, and he’s currently starring in and directing the new ‘Jack Ryan‘ film.
