Country artist Sammy Johns passed away at the age of 66 on Friday, January 4. He was best known as a singer for his 1975 hit song "Chevy Van", which sold more than 3 million copies, but it's his songwriting that I am more familiar. He wrote hit songs for the likes of Waylon Jennings, John Conlee, and Conway Twitty.

The songs written by Johns and recorded by these artists include, "Common Man", "America", "Desperado Love", and more. The songs recorded by these artists were chart topping hits,of which Johns received royalties.

He was born in Charlotte, N.C. in 1946. In addition to his country accolades Johns, as a teenager, also formed a band called the Devilles in 1962 but they only had regional success. It was his hit "Chevy Van" that put him on the map along with his song writing talent.

In 2000 Johns released an album called "Honky Tonk Moon" and made his Opry debut in 2009 singing "Chevy Van."
