5 Reasons to be Happy About the Kids Going Back to School
School is back in session. And, while many parents may be a little sad about it, there are many reasons to be happy about it. In fact, as a parent myself, I’m pretty amped up about them going back. Here are my 5 reasons that I’m grinning from ear to ear about the kids going back to school.
Electric and Other Utility Bills Go Down
I don't know about you, but both my electric bill and my water bill went up quite a bit while the kids were at home over the summer. You'd think that we powered a football stadium or something when we get the bill. It's an inevitable thing because the kids will, obviously, be watching TV more, playing video games more and running the A/C more. And, for some reason, kids don't understand the value of turning off the light when they are not in the room, or leaving the door open when they go outside to get the mail. I remember my dad always preaching to us about not letting the cold air out or turn out the light when your not in the room. I totally understand now, Dad.
Lower Grocery Bill
I can't tell you how many times my wife and I have gone to the grocery store, spent a bunch of money, and the food be gone within a few days. Kids can eat! Especially teenage kids. In fact, mine can out-eat me which is saying a lot since I'm a pretty big guy. It's like they fed the entire neighborhood or something. Now that they are back in school, that grocery bill is definitely going to go down.
House Stays Clean
My wife is really good about keeping a clean house. But as much as she cleans it, it's like a tornado touched down in the house while the kids are there. So, getting home from work after the kids have trashed the house is not cool. As they say, "when mama's not happy, nobody is happy". The kids need exactly 30 seconds to completely trash the house. Now that they are back in school, all is right with the world and our house is not going to be upside down when we get home.
One thing that I enjoy during the year is the kid's school activities. Whether it's orchestra, ROTC, football, basketball, or any number of school activities, they are just fun to go to. Plus, it keeps the kids from destroying the house right when they get home.
Less Fighting or Horseplay
Of course, the kids will always have those little fights, but, for some reason, they are worse during the summer. I think they just get a little cabin fever or get bored. It's just never cool to get home and the kids have been fighting about something, a ceiling fan blade is missing, there is a hole in the wall and the dogs are cowering in the corner because they are scared. It's like World War III happened.
