A Brief History of the Hospital

The hospital was built in 1951 and operated by the Sisters of the Roman Catholic Church. It served as a hospital until 1986, before being converted into a drug rehabilitation and recovery center. By early 1992, it was officially decommissioned and abandoned.

How the Hauntings Began

Once the facility was shuttered, the building quickly began to decay. Locals who walked near or around the property reported hearing strange sounds and seeing eerie sights. Some Yorktown residents claim the place always had a spooky feeling, even when it was still open.

Why It’s Considered Haunted

Part of what makes Yorktown Memorial Hospital especially chilling is its history of death. Reports suggest that more than 2,000 people died inside its walls during its years of operation, both as a medical hospital and later as a rehab center.

My Personal Experience

I remember visiting the hospital back in the mid-1970s when my family stopped by after my brother’s Air Force boot camp graduation in San Antonio. We went to see my mom’s aunt, Tía Pile, who was a patient there. Even as a child, I couldn’t shake the creepy feeling.

I clearly recall asking my mom, “Can we kids stay in the car while you go visit Tía Pile?” That uneasy feeling stuck with me. Whether it was an active hospital or the decaying building it later became, Yorktown Memorial always felt like something out of a ghost story.

Ghostly Encounters Still Reported

Over the years, paranormal groups and visitors have reported strange activity inside Yorktown Memorial. People claim to see shadowy figures in the hallways, hear disembodied voices, and even notice dolls moving on their own. Some visitors describe glowing red eyes in the basement and the sound of children laughing in empty rooms.

One of the most notable investigations came from The Paranormal Files, a national TV show. During their exploration, the team captured unsettling noises and even something moving in the background on camera.
