Taylor Swift’s ‘Speak Now’ Has Now Sold 5 Million Copies
Even for one of the biggest stars in the music business, Taylor Swift is having a heck of a year, including a sold-out tour with a series of celebrity guests and a pair of new Guinness World Records.
But as Taylor discovered last weekend, in a surprise ceremony hosted by her label, she isn’t finished collecting accolades in 2011.
It all happened backstage in the VIP lounge before one of Swift’s Nashville shows last weekend. Country Aircheck’s Lon Helton got things started when he stepped up to the microphone to announce that only six of the last number one singles on the country charts were credited to a solo writer — and Swift has two of them, with ‘Our Song’ and ‘Should’ve Said No.’
But the biggest news of the night came courtesy of Big Machine Label Group head Scott Borchetta, who stood before the crowd to announce, “We do have something else to celebrate this evening. As of this week, ‘Speak Now’ has sold five million copies worldwide.”
That’s an impressive number, especially during the digital era, and the crowd’s response was appropriately enthusiastic — as was Swift, who said, “The fact that it went out into the world and sold five million copies is kind of unreal. I can’t really wrap my mind around it yet. That’s so many!”
