If you’re looking to cast an actor as a humble, honorable American hero in your movie, Tom Hanks is your man. He’s the kind of good guy the whole family can get behind, the guy who will make your dad tear up at the movies. And now he’s playing that role again, this time in pilot’s gear.

In Clint Eastwood‘s Sully, (no, not John Goodman’s Monsters Inc. character), Hanks portrays the real-life Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger, who piloted the 2009 emergency landing of US Airways flight 1549 in the Hudson River. Know as the “Miracle on the Hudson,” the plane made an emergency water landing after both engines failed, saving 155 people on board. But not everyone agreed that Sully was a hero and an investigation opened questioning his piloting.

The first trailer for the film shows Hanks’ mustachioed Sully behind the wheel of the plane as the crash landing unfolds, along with the events of the investigation that followed. It’s all a bit melodramatic and very Hanks-as-a-virtuous-American-man. And that's fine, but I sort of wish Hanks would do something a little different. But if you liked American SniperSully is probably the movie of the year for you. Sully, which also stars Laura Linney and Aaron Eckhart, opens September 9.
