Texas Parks & Wildlife Is Hiring Summer Interns: Here’s What They Pay
If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a Texas Game Warden, Park Ranger, Wildlife Biologist, or even working behind the scenes in conservation, this could be your starting line. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is now accepting applications for its competitive summer internship program, and yes, many of these positions are PAID.

As a former Boy Scout who volunteered in the outdoors for nothing but experience and a handshake, I can tell you this: getting paid to work outside in Texas parks? That’s a pretty sweet deal.
Where You Can Intern
These internships give college students real-world experience across multiple divisions, including:
- Law Enforcement (Game Wardens)
- Wildlife & Fisheries
- State Parks
- Coastal & Inland Fisheries
- Communications
- IT, HR & Executive Offices
- Infrastructure & Field Operations
In other words, this isn’t just mowing grass at a park. This is career-building experience.
Who Qualifies?
To apply, you must:
- Be currently enrolled in college (or graduated within the last 6 months)
- Have completed at least 18 credit hours (Game Warden internships require 60)
- Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA
- Be at least 18 years old
- Hold a valid driver’s license (if required)
It’s competitive. But if you’re serious about conservation, this is where you start.
Let’s Talk Pay $$$
Here’s what really caught my attention:
Summer Internship Pay Rates
- Freshman–Junior (18-89 credit hours): $15.44/hour
- Senior (90+ credit hours): $15.94/hour
- Graduate/PhD students: $16.94/hour
That’s solid summer money, especially for experience that can launch a lifelong career in Texas conservation.
Not all internships are paid, but paid positions are clearly marked when posted.
How To Apply (Pay Attention Here)
Applications must be submitted online through the TPWD job portal.
Important things to know:
- You must attach official college transcripts.
- Resumes do NOT replace required documents.
- Applications missing documents will not be considered.
- Your transcript must show GPA, credit hours, and enrollment status.
- This is one of those “details matter” situations.
- Veterans: There’s Opportunity Here Too
TPWD partners with the Department of Defense SkillBridge program, offering transitioning service members hands-on training and mentorship opportunities.
That’s a big win for our military families here in Texas.
Here's One Final Thought From Me
If you’ve ever pictured yourself in a green uniform protecting Texas wildlife, or managing a state park, or helping conserve our lakes, land, and wildlife. This is how you begin.

When I was a kid, I volunteered because I loved the outdoors. Today’s students can love the outdoors and earn a paycheck while doing it.
That sounds like a Texas win to me
