How Dak Prescott's Stats Compare To Cowboys Quarterback History

Several years ago, I attempted to answer one of the most dangerous questions you can ask a Dallas Cowboys fan: Who is the greatest quarterback in franchise history?

At the time, I picked Tony Romo based on the numbers, but I also predicted Dak Prescott would eventually pass him statistically.

During the Cowboys’ 37-20 win over Washington, Dak threw four touchdown passes. His final score, a fourth-quarter strike to CeeDee Lamb, gave him 249 for his career, breaking Romo’s franchise record of 248. So, statistically, Dak Prescott now has one hell of an argument. But Cowboys fans know this debate isn’t settled with a calculator.

Statistics or Super Bowl Rings?

Tony Romo was one of the most talented quarterbacks Dallas ever had, but he never reached an NFC Championship Game. Dak owns the biggest passing records, but he is currently 2-5 in the playoffs and hasn’t made it beyond the divisional round.

Roger Staubach won two Super Bowls and became Captain America. Troy Aikman won three championships, earned a Super Bowl MVP and delivered when the lights were brightest. Danny White deserves more respect, too, after leading Dallas to three straight NFC Championship Games.

What Does "Greatest" Actually Mean?

If we’re talking statistics, Dak now sits at the head of the table. If we’re talking championships, it’s probably Aikman or Staubach, and Dak isn’t in that room yet.

My original pick was Romo. Today, I have to change it. I’m going with Troy Aikman.

Dak may eventually own damn near every Cowboys passing record, but until he leads Dallas deep into January, or finally back to the Super Bowl, Aikman’s three rings carry more weight than all those numbers. That’s my pick.

Now let the arguments begin. And, no, Danny White does not belong on this list.
