Texas Town’s “Bug Tussle” Sign Keeps Getting Stolen And People Can’t Stop Laughing
I’m not gonna lie… when I was younger, my buddies and I may or may not have “relocated” a few street signs in Texas. Allegedly. Hypothetically. For decorative purposes only.
You know the deal: stop signs, street names… suddenly, your bedroom looks like a low-budget traffic department.
Fast forward to now, and apparently, we weren’t the only ones.

Why Everyone Keeps Jacking the Bug Tussle Sign
There’s a tiny Texas community called Bug Tussle (yeah… already a red flag for sign safety), and people have stolen that sign at least 70 times over the years.
Seventy. Times. Let that sink in. That’s not theft anymore; that’s a start to a tradition.
The reason? Simple. The name is hilarious.
I mean, if you’re road tripping through Texas and you see a sign that says “Bug Tussle,” your brain immediately goes: “Yeah… that’s going on my wall.”
Where Is Bug Tussle, Texas?
Bug Tussle sits about 80 miles northeast of Dallas, Texas. The town itself only has around 15 residents, so imagine just trying to live your peaceful life while random folks keep stealing your welcome sign like it’s Buc-ee’s merch.
They finally had enough and built a massive, heavy-duty sign just to keep people from hauling it off. Because again… Texas problems require Texas-sized solutions.
The Name Is the Whole Problem (And the Whole Brand)
The name “Bug Tussle” actually goes way back to the 1890s, and there are a few stories behind it:
- Bugs are invading a church picnic
- People literally watching bugs fight (which… honestly sounds like early Texas entertainment)
- Or two guys arguing until they got distracted by bugs duking it out
No matter which version you believe, one thing is clear: This town accidentally created the most stealable sign in Texas history.
Let’s Talk About the “Uh… This Is Illegal” Part
Now… for legal reasons… I should probably say this: Taking road signs is 100% illegal.
Like, not a “slap on the wrist” thing. You can get busted for theft of government property and face some potential hefty fines. Plus, if you grab something important like a stop sign… you’re putting people in danger
So yeah… that “cool wall decor” could come with a court date.
Final Thought: Every Texan Gets It
There’s just something about Texas road trips, weird town names, and doing dumb stuff with your friends that sticks with you. Bug Tussle just happens to be the perfect storm because it’s a tiny town with a legendary name.
But now instead of stealing it… Maybe just take a picture like a normal adult. Or at least… a slightly more responsible adult.
