Abilene Has Plenty to Say About the New Arthur Sears Park Rec Center Name

Editor's Update: After this story was published, the City of Abilene contacted me to clarify that Arthur Sears Park is not being renamed. The City is asking for public input only on the name of the new recreation center being built within Arthur Sears Park, not the park itself.

Much of the reaction online appears to stem from the belief that the historic Arthur Sears Park name was being changed. The City says that is not the case, and I appreciate them reaching out to clear up the confusion. The story has been updated to reflect that clarification.

If you've spent more than five minutes scrolling through Facebook in Abilene this week, you've probably noticed one thing: folks have some pretty strong feelings about the City's search for a name for the recreational facility at Arthur Sears Park.

The City of Abilene recently unveiled four submitted names for the new recreation center and is asking for public input as the project moves forward. Fair enough. Community involvement is always a good thing.

But if the comments are any indication, a whole lot of people want the name to reflect the current name of the park...Arthur Sears Park.

Arthur Sears Park Is More Than Just a Name

Arthur Sears Park has been part of Abilene since 1949. The park honors Arthur Sears, a rancher and banker who dreamed of creating a park alongside a housing development on the city's northwest side. The Great Depression kept that dream from becoming reality during his lifetime.

After his passing, Mrs. Sears donated the land to the City, and on June 16, 1949, it officially became Arthur Sears Park, a name that's been part of Abilene history ever since.

That's not just a sign at the entrance. That's 77 years of memories.

Sometimes History Doesn't Need a Rebrand

Now, I'm all for new recreation centers. That's a win for families, kids, and our community. But judging by what I'm seeing online, many Abilenians aren't asking for a flashy new identity. They're saying, "Why not just keep the Arthur Sears Park name?"

Honestly, I kind of get it. We don't rename the Paramount because somebody builds a new stage. Sometimes a name carries history, and history matters.

Whatever name the City ultimately chooses, one thing is crystal clear: Arthur Sears Park still means something to a lot of people in Abilene. And in a town that loves its traditions, that's probably not something you want to overlook.
