Texans Frustrated As Historic Abilene State Park Pool Remains Closed
If you grew up anywhere around Abilene, chances are you spent at least one scorching Texas summer day at the historic pool at Abilene State Park.
And unfortunately, there’s more disappointing news.
According to a new press release from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the beloved Civilian Conservation Corps-era pool will remain closed “until further notice” as renovations continue.
The pool has actually been closed since 2022 while crews worked through extensive repairs and restoration projects on the nearly 100-year-old landmark.

This Pool Means A Lot To The Big Country
Look, this isn’t just some random swimming pool.
This thing was built back in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and has been part of countless Texas childhood memories for generations. I know plenty of folks around the Big Country who learned how to swim there, spent summers there, or just escaped the brutal West Texas heat there.
And honestly? There’s just something different about that pool. You can almost feel the history when you walk around it.
Park Superintendent Craig Simpson acknowledged the frustration, saying staff members who grew up swimming there want future generations to enjoy it too.
Why The Renovation Is Taking So Long

According to TPWD, the renovation process has been a lot more complicated than expected.
Structural repairs have already been completed, including new tile work, gutter repairs, repainting the pool, and restoration work on the children’s pool. But officials say additional problems were discovered involving outdated pump and filtration systems.
Another major hurdle? Back when the project first started in 2022, they reportedly received zero bids from contractors.
TPWD eventually secured a qualified contractor in 2024, and work officially began in April 2025. Now crews are replacing much of the aging equipment throughout the entire system.
What You Can Still Do At Abilene State Park
While the pool remains closed, the park itself is still open for hiking, biking, birding, camping, geocaching, and all the usual outdoor fun.
Hopefully, this thing gets reopened sooner rather than later because man, a lot of Texans are ready to cannonball back into a piece of Abilene history.
