New APD Program Lets Citizens Assist Police Across the City
Ever wanted to help keep Abilene safe, but didn’t exactly see yourself going through police academy boot camp? Good news, the Abilene Police Department (APD) just opened a door for regular folks who want to step up without carrying a badge or a gun.
APD has launched a new program called Key City Volunteers, and it’s basically a community support team designed to help officers while building stronger ties with the people they protect.
And no… this is not cosplay cops or neighborhood vigilantes. Also, I do not know if donuts are included. (Sorry, APD, I couldn't resist!)

What You’d Actually Be Doing Out There
This is legit support work that helps free up sworn officers for emergencies and serious calls. Volunteers may:
- Patrol areas and report suspicious activity
- Take reports for minor crimes
- Talk with victims and witnesses
- Help with traffic situations
- Assist officers as needed
So yeah, you’re not chasing bad guys, but you are helping keep the wheels turning in Abilene.
Who Can Apply (And Who Probably Can’t)
APD isn’t just handing out volunteer shirts to anyone who watched one episode of COPS. You must:
- Be 21 or older
- Have a valid driver’s license
- Pass a serious background check
- Commit to at least 10 hours a month
Retired military and former first responders are encouraged to apply, but you don’t have to have that background.
No Guns. No Arrests. No Action-Movie Stuff
Let’s clear this up right now: Volunteers will not carry weapons and will not make arrests. This is strictly support.
You will get about 100 hours of training, plus a uniform shirt and equipment. You may even operate a marked volunteer vehicle, which is pretty cool if you’ve ever wanted to help without signing your life away.
A New Way to Step Up for Abilene
Whether you want to give back, stay active after retirement, or just care about what happens in your neighborhood, this program gives you a way to make a real difference without becoming a full-time officer.
Honestly, programs like this can only work if good people step forward. If that sounds like you, or someone you know, get those applications in now.
