Abilene to Honor 9/11’s 25th Anniversary With Memorial Stair Climb at Shotwell Stadium
Some moments in history just never leave you.
If you were alive on September 11, 2001, chances are you remember exactly where you were when the attacks happened. I know I do. Twenty-five years later, that day still carries a lot of weight, and now Abilene is giving the community a meaningful way to honor the heroes who ran toward danger while everyone else was running away.
The Abilene Fire Department, Abilene Police Department, and Metro Care are teaming up to host a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Friday, September 11, 2026, at Shotwell Stadium.

How You Can Take Part in the Abilene Memorial Stair Climb
The event runs from 9 a.m. until noon and is open to anyone and everyone. Wanna get in?
Registration is $20, and you can sign up online once registration opens or register in person the morning of the event.

As an added bonus, the first 200 participants to complete the climb will receive a commemorative T-shirt, while the first 150 finishers will also earn a memorial medallion.
More Than Just a Stair Climb
Across the country, memorial stair climbs are held to remember the 343 New York City firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. While every climb is different, each one serves as a reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness shown that day.
Whether you're a firefighter, first responder, veteran, or someone who simply wants to pay tribute, this is a chance for the Abilene community to come together and remember.
Additional registration information is expected soon, but if this is something you'd like to be part of, I'd go ahead and mark your calendar now. Twenty-five years later, we still remember.
