If you keep up with college sports, the name Texas Tech University should ring a bell. As one of the largest universities in the state, the school's winning pedigree is known nationwide in a variety of sports. Be warned that lodgings get much pricier in the city (and much harder to come by) when Texas Tech plays home matches. Fighting the post-tailgate crowd on the Marsha Sharp Freeway is not for the faint of heart.
Lubbock also has a strong community connection to music, dating back to the superstardom rise and untimely death of rock-n-roll pioneer Buddy Holly, who was born in Lubbock in 1936. The Buddy Holly Center and the newer Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts both bear his name, as do multiple businesses around town.
For those with more regional (and modern) tastes, Lubbock nurtures a thriving community of Texas Country and Red Dirt artists, and iconic venues like the Blue Light Live have launched the careers of such storied acts as the Josh Abbott Band, William Clark Green, Flatland Cavalry, and more.
Just an Ally tip: both Caprock Cafe locations in Lubbock are significantly less busy at lunch than at dinner, so stop off for a Protein Power Bowl with broccoli and Mexican rice when you're passing through.
