Will Smith Chases Elves and Gets Beat Up By Orcs in New ‘Bright’ Trailer
“Are you a cop first, or an orc first?” is an actual line delivered by Will Smith in an actual movie. Netflix’s Bright, a fantasy buddy cop movie where magical creatures are metaphors for race relations and police brutality, seems like it’s probably just a bad dream you had after watching too many David Ayer movies and drinking too much Nyquil; but as the three press emails in my inbox this morning with the new trailer prove, Bright is very real.
In the latest trailer for the Netflix crime fantasy, Smith’s bruised police officer Ward recounts his wild night from a hospital bed. Ward and his orc partner Jakoby (Joel Edgerton) cruise through the crime-infested streets of Los Angeles, discover a blonde white elf woman with a magic wand, and shoot up a strip club, all with some buddy cop banter. If you’re still lost and wondering what, exactly, is going on, here’s the full synopsis:
Set in an alternate present-day, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) follows two cops from very different backgrounds (Ward, a human played by Will Smith, and Jakoby, an orc played by Joel Edgerton) who embark on a routine patrol night that will ultimately alter the future as their world knows it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.
A movie written by Max Landis and directed by Ayer that attempts to comment on modern day issues of class and race with magical creatures doesn’t sound like the greatest idea I’ve ever heard, but hey, I haven’t seen Bright. It could end up being hailed as a brilliant political allegory, it could be a dumb but fun buddy cop thriller, but whatever it is, at least there’s Noomi Rapace‘s blood-covered elf channeling Queen of the Damned vibes.
Bright also stars Edgar Ramirez, Lucy Fry, Jay Hernandez, and Ike Barinholtz. We’ll all finally learn whatever this movie is when it hits Netflix December 22.
