From Little to Big: How Mentorship Is Changing Lives in West Texas
Why I Believe in Big Brothers Big Sisters
If you’ve listened to my show for any length of time, you know how much I believe every child deserves a steady hand, a good role model, and someone cheering them on along the way. That’s why I’ve welcomed Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Central Texas into my studio so many times. Their mission hits home for me, helping kids who may be growing up in single-parent homes or without a positive adult to look up to.

A Powerful New Video: Jacob’s Journey of Mentorship
Big Brothers Big Sisters West Central Texas just released an inspiring new three-minute video called “From Little to BIG: Jacob’s Journey of Mentorship.” Produced by Reelview Productions, it tells the full-circle story of Jacob Bynum, a young man who grew up as a Little Brother in the program and now serves as a Big himself.
When Jacob was just six years old, he was matched with Mark Rogers, the late Market President of Big Brothers Big Sisters Abilene and a beloved community leader. Mark’s friendship and guidance helped shape Jacob’s confidence, empathy, and sense of belonging. Years later, Jacob is paying it forward by mentoring students through the PALS program at Cooper High School.
A Legacy That Lives On
“Mark was one of the most influential people in my life,” Jacob shares in the video. “The impact he had on me, I wanted to do that for somebody else.”
Today, Jacob visits classrooms at Austin, Alcorta, and Bassetti elementary schools right here in Abilene. He helps kids build confidence, discover a love of learning, and know that someone believes in them. It’s exactly the kind of ripple effect Big Brothers Big Sisters is known for, one life touched becomes another life lifted.
Why This Matters in West Texas
In our part of Texas, kids face the same struggles you hear about everywhere, broken homes, loneliness, and feeling unseen. Programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters step into that gap. They give children the chance to thrive and know that someone is rooting for them.
