Caribbean Cove Brings a Tropical Adventure to the Abilene Zoo

A West Texas Tropical Escape

The Abilene Zoo, a community treasure since 1963, has unveiled an exciting transformation: Caribbean Cove is back, bigger and better than ever. As a member of the Abilene Zoological Society myself, I can say this exhibit really does make you feel like you’ve stepped onto the islands in the Caribbean, only without leaving West Texas.

Meet the New Animals

Caribbean Cove is home to some incredible creatures, from the slow-moving sloths and playful squirrel monkeys to the colorful toco toucans and prickly prehensile-tailed porcupines. Visitors will also meet scarlet ibis, tamanduas, and even critically endangered tamarins. Each animal has a story that connects back to conservation and the importance of protecting tropical habitats.

Conservation at the Core

This reimagined Caribbean Cove reflects the Zoo’s mission of animal care and education. Habitats have been expanded by more than 200% and now include mixed-species environments, offering a more authentic wildlife experience. The upgrades also mean the animals have warm holdings for the colder months, giving guests the chance to enjoy them year-round.

A Learning Experience for All Ages

Education has always been at the heart of the Abilene Zoo, and Caribbean Cove doubles down on that mission. A brand-new educational zone near the Turtle Cove play area will host school field trips, summer camps, and special pop-up animal ambassador experiences. Every visit delivers not only fun but also meaningful lessons about wildlife conservation.

Plan Your Visit

From elephants and giraffes to lions, black bears, and now the vibrant world of the tropics, the Abilene Zoo continues to bring extraordinary animal experiences to our community. Caribbean Cove is a must-see this season.

Texas has an estimated 7.2 million dogs, more than any other state. But perhaps you’re interested in branching out a bit and adding a less common exotic pet to your home.

Granted a few of these exotics are regulated and will require permits.
