Thomas Rhett Shares His ‘Life Changes’ at 2018 CMA Awards
Rhett's performance opened with him inside of a college dorm setting with a spring formal invitation pinned to a bulletin board- a nod to the first lyric of the song, "waking up in my college dorm / yeah, my life, it was pretty normal / looking for a date to the spring formal." He donned a red varsity jacket with the words "life changes" stitched on the back. Rhett left the stage to venture into the audience and hug his wife, Lauren Akins, who is mentioned periodically in the track. The country star's vocal performance was steady and on-pitch. A marching band came out and joined him as a highlight, exhilarating the live presentation of the hit single.
Rhett's Life Changes album, released in September of 2017, was inspired by the different stages of his life and finds the country star embracing the transitions. It's an especially personal project, though getting real with his fans is nothing new for the artist, who routinely shares the details of his life with wife Lauren and daughters Willa and Ada on social media.
"It's really cool to portray your life to the people that are consuming your music, because I think it makes them relate to you on a deeper level," Rhett reflects. "[If] they didn't know anything about you and then you dropped a song like "Life Changes," it wouldn't make sense."
The album is up for Album of the Year at the CMAs, while the song "Marry Me" received a Music Video of the Year nod. Additionally, Rhett is up for Male Vocalist of the Year.
