TX-DoT Grants Funds for More Police Enforcement in Abilene
The Abilene Police Department (APD) has announced that drivers will continue to see more officers on the road through the end of 2025. Thanks to a grant provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), APD is able to increase patrols and focus on making Abilene roadways safer for everyone. The Abilene Police are calling this traffic crackdown; ‘Operation Slowdown’.

Targeted Areas Around Abilene
According to APD Public Information Coordinator Rick Tomlin, officers will be assigned to specific high-traffic corridors on a month-to-month basis. These areas include the Winters Freeway and the South First Street corridor, two of the busiest stretches of roadway in the city. By concentrating enforcement in these locations, the department hopes to cut down on risky driving behavior where it matters most.
What Officers Will Be Looking For
Selected officers will be watching closely for:
- Speeding violations
- Distracted driving (like texting behind the wheel)
- Seatbelt and child restraint violations
- Driving While Intoxicated (DWI)
Each of these factors is a leading contributor to crashes in Texas, and police officials stress that changing habits now can save lives down the road.
A Reminder for Drivers
The Abilene Police Department wants to remind everyone to practice safe driving at all times, whether you’re headed across town or just down the street. The goal of this program isn’t just to issue tickets, but to reduce crashes and protect families traveling through Abilene.
As enforcement continues, drivers can expect to see more flashing lights on Abilene roadways, but ideally, fewer accidents.
