Phil Bredesen, Taylor Swift’s Choice for Senate, Responds to Her Endorsement
Phil Bredesen — who's up against Marsha Blackburn for a seat in the U.S. Senate — thanked Swift for the love and urged Tennesseans to unite and register to vote.
"Thank you for the kind words @taylorswift13," Bredesen tweeted on Sunday (Oct. 7) evening. "I’m honored to have your support and that of so many Tennesseans who are ready to put aside the partisan shouting and get things done. We’re ready for it. Last day to register to vote is October 9."
The Bredesen-Blackburn race for Senate is a hotly contested, heavily advertised campaign that those who live in many parts of Tennessee see or hear about frequently on television and radio. In an Instagram post, Swift reveals that she's choosing the candidate she feels most aligns with her definition of equality for all persons. Of Blackburn, she claims:
Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values.
Additionally, Swift says she supports Jim Cooper for the House of Representatives. As of Monday morning, Cooper has not responded. Blackburn has not responded to Swift endorsing her competition for the seat, but the response from supporters of both political parties has been divisive and strong.
