Ian McKellen is one of the most esteemed board-treaders alive, a thespian who has consistently and successfully balanced work on the stage with appearances before the camera. At 77, he’s had the chance to assay some of history’s great Shakespearean roles, portraying everyone from Macbeth to Coriolanus to Richard III. And today brings the news that a new project will allow him to blend his passions for the proscenium and the closed set in a revisiting of a signature role that McKellen last tackled way back in 1971.

‘The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies’ Review: Give Me Back My Precious (Time)
Having gone on an unexpected journey and endured the desolation of Smaug, Peter Jackson’s bloated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ finally comes to ‘The Battle of the Five Armies,’ which is less of a climax to this trilogy than a distended epilogue. After spending two movies and 330 minutes building up the dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) as the ultimate antagonist, he’s eliminated from the story completely in the first ten minutes. He’s literally gone before the title appears onscreen.

‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’ Review: A Time Travel Movie That Somehow Makes Sense
Even though the story behind ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ has been around for 33 years now, the idea of a superhero movie meshed with a movie about time travel seems, let’s say … daunting. Especially for a superhero franchise like X-Men, which is known for having a lot of superheroes. It’s just that it’s hard enough to make a big-budget superhero movie make sense (as the so very recent ‘The Amazin

'X-Men: Days of Future Past' has a lot of moving parts -- it's based on a comic book, it combines both casts of the original 'X-Men' movie trilogy and that of 'First Class,' and there's some pretty unique time traveling going on -- so it's understandable if those unfamiliar with the franchise or the story get a bit lost. That's where we come in! We give you everything you need to know about 'X-Men

Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart Take Over ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’
Sure, Seth Meyers gets a few good-natured digs in before Ian McKellen flips the script and quite literally takes over his own 'Late Night,' but that doesn't mean that anyone was having a bad time on the show last night. Meyers, finishing up his first week as 'Late Night' host, welcomed everyone's favorite pair of best friends -- McKellen and Patrick Stewart -- and the results were both charming an

‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ Review
There comes a time when we must stop kidding ourselves. These 'Hobbit' films – with 'The Desolation of Smaug' representing the shank of the trilogy – are not real movies. These are exploitation films for Tolkien nuts, for enthusiasts of the original 'Lord of the Rings' movies and for audiences so hungry for high fantasy they'll gobble up whatever is served to them and ask for seconds.
