Dog Is My CoPilot Helps Texas Dogs Reach Forever Homes
Texas Rescue Groups Take Flight: Saving Dogs One Plane Ride at a Time
In West Texas, where abandoned and unwanted animals too often fill shelters, Rescue the Animals, Abilene, is proving that second chances don’t just happen, sometimes, they fly. Thanks to a powerful partnership with Dog Is My CoPilot, dogs rescued from neglect, hoarding cases, abandonment, or overcrowded shelters are being flown across the country to their forever homes.
From West Texas Shelters to a Couch in the Snow
Maverick’s journey
One of those dogs is Maverick, once known as Merkel before his new family renamed him. For two long years, Maverick lived the heartbreaking cycle that too many rescue dogs face: shelters, foster homes, more shelters, and endless social media posts begging for someone to notice him.
No one did.
Until Rescue the Animals connected him with Dog Is My CoPilot.

Maverick boarded a transport flight alongside other rescue dogs, heading to an approved adopter in a northern state. Today, Maverick is living his best life, snuggled on a couch, surrounded by his favorite toys, and even sharing space with a cat. His new owners say he’s smart, loving, thriving, and adjusting, although the snowy climate is still a shock for a dog raised in West Texas.
The Work Behind the Wings
Before any dog boards a transport plane, Rescue the Animals and its volunteer network handle the hard work:
- Vaccinations and health certificates
- Vet checks and medical clearances
- Foster coordination
- Adoption screening and approvals
Only pre-approved adopters are allowed to receive dogs after they land. When the plane touches down in states like Montana, Wisconsin, Kansas, Missouri, and 40+ others (including rescue partners in Canada), families are waiting at the airport with tears in their eyes, because they already know that the dog is theirs.
Better Odds in Other States
In West Texas, large dogs, working breeds, and mixes often wait months, sometimes years, for adoption. Meanwhile, in other parts of the country, people are on waiting lists, hoping for a dog exactly like those sitting in our shelters.
Transport flights close that gap.
And they save lives.
Lives Saved, Futures Changed
The photos that accompany this story show the real impact, dogs who were once abandoned are now sleeping in beds, hiking in the mountains, or learning how to play in the snow.
Because of Rescue the Animals and Dog Is My CoPilot, being unwanted is not the end of the story.
For many dogs… It’s just the beginning.
