Country group Old Dominion were on a high following their first-ever CMA Awards win during the 2018 ceremony on Wednesday evening (Nov. 14), but in a media event during the show, the group told The Boot and other media outlets that they felt fairly confident leading up to the ceremony.

Old Dominion won in the category of Vocal Group of the Year, where they were up against some stiff competition: Lady Antebellum, Lanco, Little Big Town and Midland were all among the nominees.

"I think we felt pretty good coming into this, but you never know. It's a tough category," band frontman Matthew Ramsey explains. "We felt pretty good -- or, I personally felt pretty good right up until they opened the envelope. And then I thought, 'Welp, we don't have it.'"

However, his last-minute doubts turned out to be unfounded; the group was called up to accept the award, their first-ever at the show. "It's been a hell of a year for us, and it's very gratifying and validating to finally get to have one of these," Old Dominion explains.

Old Dominion are wrapping up a successful -- and busy! -- year on the road: Their lengthy Happy Endings 2018 World Tour concludes in December. They made a stop back in Nashville in September, for a memorable, star-studded evening at the Ryman, which featured appearances from Sam HuntKelsea Ballerini, their own longtime tour boss Kenny Chesney and more country stars. The group is also in the studio readying their third full-length album; they released their latest single, "Make It Sweet," in October.
