Morgan Wallen didn't know what to expect when he first covered "Cover Me Up" by Jason Isbell, but he's taking the response and running with it.

The "Whiskey Glasses" hitmaker covered the song during his Taste of Country RISERS taping and immediately fans took to it, praising the intimate nature of the performance. That was after they picked their jaws up off the floor, of course.

Could the same guy who brought us "Up Down" really do this?! Yep. Flawlessly:

Isbell himself even appreciated the performance, but it was Wallen's fans who surprised him most. "My fans know me as cutoff-wearing mullet guy so I didn’t know how they would take it," he revealed during a No. 1 party for "Whiskey Glasses." "You see those same people like that, though."

The performance and response epitomizes "Don't judge a book by its cover." Sure, rowdy rednecks who raise a beer for "Up Down" and grow mullets just like his love the revelry and rowdy nature of a good drinking song, but that's not all they are. It's a stereotype — one an artist who appeals to that slice of American needs to be careful not to believe too absolutely.

"Whiskey Glasses" is a softer, more poignant heartbreak song, and Wallen's new single "Chasin' You" is a vulnerable lost-love song. Expect more introspective songs on his second album, which is a work in progress.

“It definitely has inspired me, given me confidence to chase a little more of that in my own songwriting,” he says about the response to his "Cover Me Up" performance. “I just want to be able to do it all just because that’s what life is.”

Ben Burgess and Kevin Kadish wrote "Whiskey Glasses," Wallen's second No. 1 single after "Up Down." He also has a No. 1 hit as a songwriter, having co-written Jason Aldean's "You Make It Easy."
