Mandalay Bay Re-Numbering Floor Where Route 91 Festival Gunman Stayed
In the aftermath of the tragic mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on Oct.1, 2017, Mandalay Bay will be re-numbering the floors of their hotel. A room on the 32nd floor of the Las Vegas casino and resort served as the vantage point for a gunman who killed 58 people and injured dozens more.
The resort is re-numbering the floors from 31-34 and changing them to floors 56-59, in an effort to remove the association of the 32nd floor with the tragedy, according to the owner of Mandalay Bay, MGM Resorts.
“What MGM wants to do is move on from the tragedy and service customers without ignoring but without calling attention to it,” Michael McCall, a hospitality professor at Michigan State University tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “You don’t want [the 32nd floor] to become a morbid tourist site.”
The 43 floor hotel has an historically unconventional numbering system, as floors 35-39 are operated by the Four Seasons hotel and the floor numbers 40-59 have never been used at the location. Elevators in the resort will now show access to floors 1-30 and 56-63.
Jason Aldean was playing his closing set at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on Oct. 1 when shots rained down from a window on the 32nd floor of the hotel. Aldean and the other artists affected, as well as the entire country music community, are continuing to pick up the pieces after the horrific event.
