Hear ‘Hurt’, Another New Lady Antebellum Song
Lady Antebellum have released another new song from their upcoming album, Heart Break. Readers can press play above to listen to "Hurt."
"Hurt" is a heartbreaker (pun intended) of its own sort: The slow-building song is an emotional ode to unrequited love. Lady Antebellum's trademark harmonies are surrounded by swelling orchestration -- a turn from the catchy, upbeat sounds of "Heart Break" and "This City," both non-singles that Lady A have already shared from Heart Break.
"You're a carnival on a summer night / Gone too soon every time," Lady Antebellum sing in "Hurt. "Yeah, it's beautiful how you burn so bright / In the wasteland you leave behind."
The lyrics of "Hurt" embody the heartache of a one-sided love affair. Hillary Scott's vocals in particular are haunting.
"It's very raw; it's really emotional to sing, for me," Scott says in a video about the song. "[It's about] those moments of when you are in a relationship a little bit more than the other person was and how hurtful that is, how much it hurts, and this song is really special to us."
"Hurt" is one of only two songs on Heart Break that Lady Antebellum didn't write, but all three members -- Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood -- agree it's a favorite. They'd been pitched the song previously, and Kelley suggested it for the country trio's forthcoming record.
"I was really proud of it, but it wasn't until busbee, our producer, went on his own and did some string arrangements," Kelley explains. "He also had a dobro player come in, and that was like -- it was the minute I heard the strings and the dobro is when it started breaking my heart."
Heart Break is set for release on June 9.
