Kacey Musgraves is making it her mission to create a welcoming atmosphere in country music. During a recent public appearance, the country star explained that she hopes fans of all stripes can enjoy her music and feel comfortable at her concerts.

As reported by Vulture, Musgraves recently appeared at the New Yorker Festival and spoke about country music's lack of inclusion. An audience member asked the Texas native how she feels about being seen as an LGBTQ icon, and Musgraves took the question as an opportunity to talk about a recent interaction she had with a fan.

“What I think it is — someone told me this recently and it broke my heart — they said, 'I’ve grown up loving country music, and I grew up gay in a small town,'" Musgraves shared, "'and country music has always felt like a big party that I wasn’t invited to.'

"Oh my god, you’re invited to my party,” she continued. “It’s crazy that a certain kind of a person could feel excluded from a genre that’s so real — or supposed to be so real. That has always really pissed me off."

Musgraves' desire to create an inclusive atmosphere stems from a childhood friendship. Her friend came out to Musgraves when they were younger and both living in small-town Texas. “I was the first person he told,” the singer shares. “I had an idea, it was an unspoken thing, but it was so painful and hard for him to tell me, even though I was totally fine with it.

"Thinking about him and all of those other kids who are like, 'I love country music, why can’t I be a part of this? Why isn’t my narrative included?' I don’t know," Musgraves adds.

Musgraves has been a fierce champion of equality in the country music world since she first hit Nashville. Songs such as "Follow Your Arrow" seek to normalize the mention of same-sex relationships, while her song "Good Ol' Boys Club" takes on the business side of the industry ("Cigars and handshakes / Appreciate ya, but no thanks").

"There are many caveats to the current system that need a thorough rebuild," Musgraves recently told Billboard about the country music scene. "I’m hoping we can get back to a musical world where talent and uniqueness got you further than politics ... Can you imagine what that landscape could sound like? What future generations it could inspire?"

Musgraves' CMA-nominated latest album, Golden Hour, was released on March 30. She's hit the road for her Oh, What a World Tour, after spending the summer on tour with Harry Styles.
