So, before you hit the water on your new speeder or yacht, there are some small things you need to do first.

How to Get a Texas Boating License

You have two options when it comes to taking boating courses in Texas: online or in-person. You can sign up for online boating courses through the TPWD website, but be advised that each option comes with its own fee ranging from $11 to $70.

If you choose the in-person route, the State of Texas has a detailed to-do list before you can register for boater education classes. Surprisingly, you must be at least 13-years-old in order to legally obtain your boating license in Texas.

Understanding Life Jacket Laws in Texas

In Texas, children under 13 on recreational vessels that are within 26 feet in length are required by law to wear life jackets. Adults, although not required to wear vests at all times, must have them easily accessible in instances of emergencies.

If you aren't sure what you legally need on your boat here in Texas, you can always check the required equipment page from TPWD for guidance.

Finally, did you know that there are five different types of life jackets? They vary in buoyancy (float-ability) with Type 1 being the least buoyant and Type 5 being the most for deep water.

Each jacket will indicate if it's able to turn the wearer face-up or not. This is meant to keep an unconscious sailor alive and above water until help arrives.

Boating can be one of the most relaxing activities in your life, it's just important to know the laws in Texas and how to keep you and your family safe while out on the waves.
